Wow. It’s been quite some time since a book has pulled me in as well and as quickly as this one. “Fireworks at Midnight,” by Tara Quan is the third book in her “A Witch’s Night Out” series, and I am now on a mission to read the other two.
The characters are fun, realistic and engaging. The dialogue is perfectly paced, as is the rest of the story, and the plot is cute without being contrived. Did I mention the romance? The totally, scorching hot romance? “Fireworks” is right.
From the first scene to the last, you will love Quan’s use of action, suspense and pure, old-fashioned charm. In fact, the only complaint I can think of is the story ends too soon! Not in a developmental way – but in a “I really want to read more of such a good story” way. Like when you finish the best book ever and immediately want to read it again. And talk about well written: I couldn’t find a single editorial error, unnecessary line, superfluous character or cliché’ to distract.
What I did find is Dulcina “Sweets” Gato, a spunky and smart young woman making her way through the world, even as she’s distracted by her magical abilities and a tendency toward precognition. Sweet’s is a bit off kilter when her best friend's brother – and her former school-girl crush – Mikal Night barges back into her life.
Mikal has major plans for Sweets. He may have found her earlier kitten-like escapades annoying, but now she’s absolutely tantalizing. Mikal’s got a few other reasons for re-connecting with Sweets, but you’ll have to read the story to find out what they are. And believe me, you’ll enjoy it.
I rarely give such glowing reviews, but Quan’s pegged a solid 5 on the Masq Scale. I’d give her more, but the Crew won’t let me!

Dulcina Gato is a witch who is having a very bad day. First, her microwave catches fire while she's trying to make coffee, then she has a vision, and to top it off, she's broke.
Enter Mikal, her roomate's hot-as-hades brother, who just happens to be an agent for the magical law enforcement bureau, and things get complicated and pretty steamy.
Tara Quan has a way with words. I loved her characters and the world she has created. Since this is her third book, now I'm going to have to go back and check out the others. Count me as hooked.
