Written by Erin Danzer

Genre: Young Adult Science Fiction

Book Synopsis

Fifteen-year-old Veronica “Ronnie” Lambert wants to get out from under her older brother’s shadow. When Ronnie gets a tattoo and then is struck by lightning, she suddenly finds herself able to see and hear things in shadows that don’t appear to others. Then Ronnie meets Gavin Clearwater, the hot new guy in all of her classes and finds out he can see and hear the same things she can.

Gavin tells her about the Spiral Defenders, a group of warriors that travels through space and time to defend the planets of the Spiral. After meeting the Commander of the Spiral Defenders and realizing his intentions might not be pure, Ronnie struggles between following her destiny to become a Spiral Defender and trying to regain the life she had before being struck by lightning.

Belinda F's Review

Into the Spiral is a science fiction young adult cross over that manages to tick the boxes as a good read for both genres. It begins with the main character Ronnie on her fifteenth birthday. She's taking control of her life from her over bearing mother and getting herself the tattoo that will lead her to discover the truth about who she really is. The opening scenes do a good job of foreshadowing the drama to come.

The characters in this novel are well drawn and Ronnie herself is particularly believable as a fifteen year old girl coming to terms with her blossoming maturity, enjoying her first kiss and generally finding more than one boy to be of interest! The story is well written and unfolds well from within Ronnie's view point, her confusion about what is happening to her and her fear are very real.

I was keen to discover more about her protector Gavin who is also a love interest and about the new world she is about to be inducted into. There are clearly going to be some interesting challenges ahead for Ronnie and because she is such a good character you are left concerned for her and wanting to cheer her on because you feel you know her so well. I haven't read a lot of science fiction but this drew me in and will certainly see me downloading the next installment in the trilogy.
