A unique take on vampires
It is such a relief to read a book about vampires in which the vampires in question are actually evil and not brooding and pining for some teenage girl. The Mysterious Albion features a group of vampire hunters operating in secret as part of the Catholic church in London.
In a word, it's a great blend of Catholicism, (without being too reverent/preachy) sharp wit, vampire lore and also has a nice romantic subplot that's adorable.
Lucy in particular is a fantastic character. She's not a two-dimensional sexpot, but is instead a fully realized woman dealing with loss by finding a determination to fight back. This book follows her training as she joins the secret group of hunters and enters the world of the supernatural.
It's always a treat to have a strong female protagonist who is three-dimensional, brave in the face of things that would make anyone's blood run cold, but perfectly human and therefore dealing with stakes that are higher than they might be for those who would have some sort of special abilities.
There's also a very nice integration of British culture and descriptions of various spots within London and Catholic culture. This book is very rich in building the supernatural into a beautifully described version of that existing world and culture.
Riveting read with
class act crafting of characters
If the prologue doesn’t make you reel, chapter one should do the trick.
In general I like vampire reads. Going back several years to when Ms. Rice released her vampire tales- vampires had some oomph to them.
Then it seemed with the arrival of several vampire themed TV shows, vampires turned rather soap opera-ish. It became harder to find true vampire reads.
With that being said, it was a
pleasure to come across this book.
The characters are well crafted and the plot is well oiled. I glided effortlessly and quickly through this story and when the end loomed I was sad to see it fast approaching.
In my opinion this book warrants all five stars and if there was a higher rating, I would be giving it to this book. Excellent read with suspense, drama and all the right twists and turns (and of course- vampires).
