The Challenges and Rewards of Writing a Series

The idea for the Forbidden Things series came to me all at once, so I didn’t have to worry about how to keep the series going, but there are a lot of challenges to writing a series. Probably the biggest challenge is consistency. You have to track everything from a character’s eye color to the details of every subplot to make the events and characters in each book are consistent with everything from the prior book or books. In my case, I used spreadsheets to track a lot of the details so I wouldn’t mess something up from one book to the next.

Another challenge you can run in to with writing a series is that your voice can change as you develop as an author and it is important to keep that as consistent as possible across all of the books in a series. Since I originally wrote all three books in this series back to back it was a little easier, but I’ve had to be careful in the editing process since there was a fair bit of time between the edits of book one and the edits of the other two.

One of my favorite things about writing a series is how deeply you get to know the world and the characters and how thoroughly you can develop those things. The world can become as real as the one you live in and you get to know the major characters almost better than you know your own family. The downside of is that, at least for me, I had a hard time letting go when the series was done. It was almost as if I’d lost some dear friends and I still think about the characters in this series a lot even though I have since moved on to other projects.

She also enjoys horseback riding, archery, PC gaming, dancing, good anime, etc. She studies Japanese and practices Iaido because she believes we should never stop learning.
