“I appreciate your concern, Sergeant,” Lee said. “But it isn’t your problem. Really.”
That was when she realized that Rock O’Connor hadn’t accepted her dinner invitation simply because he wanted to gaze into her eyes over wine and French bread. Standing one step above her, he watched her, his eyes suddenly wary. Before he said a word, she knew she didn’t want to hear it.
“I’m afraid it is my problem,” he told her in an infuriatingly calm voice.
Lee faced off with him, arms crossed, posture rigid. “And why is that?”
He was at least gentleman enough to step down to her level before facing her. “I wanted to talk to you alone, because I need to find out all I can about the people you know.”
Suddenly she couldn’t breathe. “Why?”
He didn’t even flinch. “Because I think one of them is trying to kill you.”
