The Beginning

You’re in the middle of a cornfield.

I'm on a rich hillside...

On a cold hard surface...

The rolling sea

The puddle I woke half in and half out...

I peeled my whiskey heavy left eyelid open...

Reminds me of college days

In a cyrostasis pod

In a dream

I awoke to the smell of sweet perfume...

I am inside an OT...

The sound of rifle shots...

On the back of my hand...

You’re in the middle of a cornfield. You can’t see over the tops of them, so you decide to head in one direction, hoping you’ll reach the end eventually. You end up walking for hours and there’s no end in sight...And it’s so quiet except for the rustling of cornstalks and your own footsteps, but you can’t help but wonder if there’s something else hidden in the corn.

Out walks a doppelganger of yourself.
You grow increasingly tired...

The puddle I woke half in and half out of smelled of rotten stink with a shimmer of oil reflecting the pale moon light float. I, dressed in my finest, can't imagine a rhyme or reason why I woke in such a strange place. I hear my name shouted by a man, I imagine it's my love, but the voice is off. I listen again, rising to my knees, shivering in the child. Another voice rises in the night air, chilling me to my bone. Hurry! Find ... There's my name again! A gun goes off, and I rise to my feet and run...

I peeled my whiskey heavy left eyelid open but bright sunlight blinded me. Sunlight? Wait, MY bed was a lumpy futon beneath a frayed and stiff afghan in a dingy apartment with blackout curtains...but this... this king size sumptuous white silken duvet cover and the airy morning light upon polished gleaming hardwood floors was NOT where I had lain my head down last night. Something was very, very wrong... The sound of approaching high heels clicking on the teak sobered me instantly.

I'm not sure... But I can guess. The smells that hung in the air reminds me of college days... That's when my eyes opened wider, my head spinning.... Am I on Bascom Hill! But how? I hear the whispers, "Is she OK?" "Is she actually asleep in her PJs" "I swear I just heard her snoring" I groan and sit up slowly. Yup, I was back in Madison WI, on Bascom Hill, in my pajamas and I don't know how.

You grow increasingly tired from the task at hand as you wipe your forehead instantly regretting it as you’ve now rubbed whatever substance has begun to attack the cornstalks all over your face. You’ve also worked up an appetite but the anxiety of being lost trumps the growling growing louder in your stomach. Of course you have plans tonight, would this happen on a night you didn’t. You take a seat to try and grasp what’s taking place but instantly shoot back to a standing position when you hear a scream from behind you. “Don’t stop,” the voice shrills. “The baby has to be here somewhere!”

I awoke to the smell of sweet perfume, earth, grass and dew. As I opened my eyes, I realized that even though I was there, I was also outside of myself. I was watching myself as if through a crystal ball. This was strange. Was I truly awake? Was this a dream inside a dream? My bed was made of thousands upon thousands of blood velvety red roses. My gown; a beautiful rendition fresh out of ancient Pompeii. I gazed upon my surroundings; it reminded of the Emerald City. I wanted to explore. Before I stood completely, the ground began to groan and shake.

The sound of rifle shots came thick like winter hail and mingled in my frantic heartbeat. My eyes flew open, blurry with the view of a slow moving ceiling fan. The strong acrid scent of bleach enveloped my nostrils. Panic coated all of my senses. “Dammit! Where in the hell am I now?!” I muttered to myself as I forced out the all too familiar headache and buzzing noise from my ears. I tried to remember where and when I was. Crap! I left Rhys in London helping a French spy deliver a important message to Napoleon Bonaparte. Suddenly, the door swung open. A woman clad in white entered - her shoulders heaving, fingers shaking, eyes tearing. “You!” she shouted, “Get the surgical trays ready! The first wave is coming!” “First wave?!” I asked stupidly. I hated this part. I didn't know where I was, let alone what time period I time traveled to. When will I ever get control of my time travelling? Rhys will b furious, if not worried or majorly vexed for needing to jump through periods to find me. “First wave of injured soldiers,” she said squaring her shoulders and straightening her white cap, “The Japs just bombed Pearl Harbor.”

On the back of my hand, I can feel a little, irritating tickle. Like a beetle. Like an ant. Through the slant of my eyelids I look down. I am heavy - lost to sleep. It takes me several moment to understand the scene.

I am not in bed. I am not in bed. It is spittle. Drool. Someone else’s fluid: not my own.

I recalculate; no, no. I recalibrate. I compute. I me; alert; present. An electrical wire. I am now. And I see it. I remember. There it is - my beautiful, terrifying, delicate, fragile, baby.
