“Wouldn’t think of it,” Joe said as he steered Allison down the hall.
Allison didn’t need a strong shoulder to lean on, a knight in shining armor to lift her up over the muck of life. She didn’t need his compassion when she knew it would just wither away.
“You didn’t trust me enough to tell me about Maggie?” Joe cautiously asked.
“I’ve heard you talk about the family you want. A house full of children who’ll play the piano and star in major-league baseball. And you should have that, but I’m not the person who can give that to you.”
Joe shook his head. “You never gave me the chance to make up my own mind.”
