Chapter One

Two Weeks Ago

Marc Locke cursed under his breath. And then he cursed again as he sat up in his uncomfortable office chair and watched his boss walk into the room. This operation was going to be more difficult than he first thought.

“Did you hear me, Locke?” The gruff voice of Peter Crown, his newly appointed boss at the FBI, interrupted his thoughts.

“Yes, sir. Sorry.” Marc focused his attention back on Peter’s serious dark eyes.

“We’ve found you a way into the Nelson presidential campaign.” Peter took a seat across from him. “The evidence indicating illegal contributions is mounting against the Senator, but we need someone on the inside to put together all the pieces. I want to believe the Senator’s innocent, but God only knows what his staff is up to. Under the new campaign contribution laws, things have gotten murky.”

Marc knew the case inside and out. Peter sounded like he was trying to convince himself that he was making the right call. Marc leaned back in his chair and waited for Peter to tell him something he didn’t know.

“So you’re going in undercover as a security specialist. I know your file. Your military background makes you a perfect fit. Now that Nelson is his party’s nominee for President, the Secret Service will be providing security. But the candidate always wants their own personal staff too, and you’ll fill that role working at Nelson campaign headquarters. Uncovering political corruption is a high priority for the FBI. There can’t be an ounce of partisanship or our investigation will be DOA.” Peter leaned forward in his seat and flattened his hands across the large wooden desk. “We need credibility. Your record with us is impeccable. So don’t screw up.”

“I won’t screw up,” Marc said, believing each word. Because this time he wouldn’t. He still had a lot to atone for.

Peter raised an eyebrow. “Good. Get the job done. That’s all I ask. Follow the evidence wherever it leads you and report back. Understood?”

“Yes, sir.”

Peter nodded and walked out of his office. Peter was a nice enough guy, but he was too much of a paper pusher for Marc’s taste. At the FBI he got to put away bad guys for a living—and with a lot less stress on his body than being a member of Delta Force. Or at least that was the reason he gave anyone who asked him why he left the military.

The idea of being a security consultant was intriguing, or maybe he’d end up being just hired muscle. He’d have to see which way he wanted to play it. He was glad to be back in the field. The past six months at a desk left him itching for more, but what he had accomplished was impressive. Convincing the higher ups at the Bureau to open an official investigation into Senator Nelson’s campaign financing was huge. He was driven to uncover the truth. The thought of all his friends, his brothers in arms, who lost their lives fighting for the country made his temper flare. Why should they fight for a country that was full of crooked politicians?

He didn’t have anything against Senator Nelson specifically, but he hated politicians who had corrupt campaign finance systems. There was so much money in politics through legal means. Why did the pols now have to start illegal campaign financing too? Given the sensitive nature of the campaign, Peter was right. The last thing he wanted was to be seen as one of President Helen Riley’s operatives. The FBI wanted the truth and so did he. It was time to go get hired for the job.

What fans are saying

This is a fun, fast-paced read filled with strong, likable characters and a solid storyline. I loved the two special ops guys and I hope the Navy SEAL gets his own story soon! I really enjoyed being immersed in the world of campaign politics! I love reading an escape story that teaches me something and gives me an insight into a world I'm not very familiar with. Looking forward to the next Love and Scandal book in the series!

This was a very exciting read. The way she writes the story, you never know what will happen next. I didn't want to stop reading because I wanted to know how it was going to end. I read it in one day, and will read it again. Marc and Viv are made for each other. Marc was a wonderful hero, and I enjoyed watching watching them fall in love. Kept me guessing until the end.

The backdrop settings and dialogue was all action, heated passion and kick ass romance! I simply could not stop myself from putting this read down once I stated ! It was as if I was in a world of passion found amongst a totally amazing, rocking, kick ass action film only far more intense!

The author kept my attention at all times, never a dull moment in this read. And my oh my was the suspense awesome! More than once I was shouting out loud "That did not just happen, really I did not see that coming".
