Staci T.'s Review

Twenty-Five Years Ago Today by Stacy Juba is a contemporary romantic suspense novel full of mystery and romance. Kris Langley left the fast pace of New York and returned to Massachusetts, primarily to run from ghosts of bad memories. In her effort to evade nightmares of her cousin’s death, she takes a job as an editorial assistant working the night shift. While on the job, she stumbles across a cold case of a murdered young woman, the town’s only unsolved murder. Unable to avoid comparisons between the cold case and her cousin’s murder, she embarks on a lengthy investigation to solve the murder and give the family the peace that has eluded her for so long.

Kris’s journey is a heart-wrenching one. As she tries to bring closure to the victim’s family, she battles demons in her own psyche. During her investigation, she is first castigated by the victim’s nephew, Eric Soares, then joined by him in her quest for truth. She expects the research to be difficult and tedious; she doesn’t expect it to turn dangerous. Finding solace and comfort in Eric’s arms, she continues chasing down leads until her research threatens to destroy not just the very people she was trying to help, but herself as well.

Each chapter begins with a news snippet from twenty-five years earlier, which is a nice touch. I found the main characters well-developed and multi-dimensional. The plot progressed in a smooth, logical fashion, offering potential suspects and plausible motives through to the climax. The ending is a tad improbable—though not impossible—and does deliver a resolution that will satisfy readers. If you’re looking for a quick read that hints at romance, flirts with danger, and keeps you guessing, Stacy Juba’s Twenty-Five Years Ago Today is the novel for you.
