Oh, Kendrick was a cool witch. She wouldn’t be when he finished with her, took her down a notch, made her suffer as he had suffered. In his mind, the battlefield surfaced—the stench of death, the acrid smoke from the howitzers, and the blood-drenched soldiers searching the ground for lost limbs. He placed his hands behind his back so she wouldn’t see the onset of tremors. The affliction would pass soon and he didn’t want her pity. He wanted her, needed to taste every inch of her delectable skin, suck the tongue from her luscious mouth and bury himself deep inside her.
Serena Akeroyd's Review
I've never been a fan of short stories, because if they’re good, then they’re just too damned short! And this is just one of those situations! Keta Diablo’s Cradle of Dreams could have, so easily, been developed into a longer book. But as it is, it didn’t disappoint.
Classed as an erotic, time-travel… I wouldn’t exactly call it that. Yes, it’s rather erotic, but it isn’t exactly time travel. It’s more like a love that calls through the ages; that transcends time. Not a physical manifestation of Kendra, the present heroine, travelling back a hundred or so years. I think Keta Diablo tries to connect the past and the present to make it so, but it doesn’t work. There are various occurrences that appear in both periods; so it does seem more like fate, than anything else.
The beginning read a little too much like a literary dissection of Wuthering Heights, and I preferred the story when it entered the past. Ms. Diablo’s voice really came to the front here. I enjoyed her descriptions of the scenes. As well as the characterization of Kendrick and Roane.
The ending was too abrupt. There were many things that could have been explained; indeed, that I would have loved to know. While she did a good job of introducing and making me enjoy the characters, there was so much left out. I’d love to know more about the pair of them as well as the repercussions of their actions.
I thought the device to switch from past to present was a little lame, to be honest. And the ratio of time spent on either side was off. But that being said, it’s a good read. 4.5 stars out of 5. :)
