Because every book is furiously fast-paced and filled with fact without the reader feeling dumped upon from a great height. His humour and that of his fierce legionaries is the perfect balance in serious novels about imperial Rome.

Why do you recommend this series?


The Marius's Mules series are so engaging that having read the first and forming a relationship with protagonist Fronto, one has to read on through all four books. The fifth is being written now. As you can see, the letter 'F' is vital: 'first','Fronto', 'four', and 'fifth'.
