The Casquette Girls

Written by Alys Arden

Genre(s): Paranormal, Horror

AFTER THE STORM OF THE CENTURY rips apart New Orleans, Adele Le Moyne and her father are among the first to return to the city following the mandatory evacuation. Adele wants nothing more than for life to return to normal, but with the silent city resembling a mold-infested war zone, a parish-wide curfew, and mysterious new faces lurking in the abandoned French Quarter, normal will have to be redefined.

Events too unnatural – even for New Orleans – lead Adele to an attic that has been sealed for three hundred years, and the chaos she unleashes threatens not only her life but everyone she knows. Mother Nature couldn’t drain the joie de vivre from the Big Easy, but someone or something is draining life from its residents.

Caught suddenly in a hurricane of eighteenth-century myths and monsters, Adele must quickly untangle a web of magic that links the climbing murder rate back to her own ancestors. But who can you trust in a city where everyone has a secret, and where keeping them can be a matter of life and death – unless, that is, you’re immortal.

Jann Jeter's Review

Never Trust a Vampire!

Right off the bat I have to admit I don't like books about vampires. I can read and write about things happening in outer space, but thinking of undead creatures who thrive on sucking you dry just gives me the heebie-jeebies. I signed up to review a book for a site however, and of the choices offered this one struck a chord with me.

The fact that most of it took place in New Orleans was a plus, and the descriptive narrative of the city and its people after 'the storm' made points with me. The characters are well thought out and seem as near as my next door neighbors.

My favorite? Ren. What a hoot - I would love to go on a tour of Nawleans anytime with him! The story took a while to lure me in (remember - I don't like books about vampires), but once I was hooked, I was snagged deep. It is a young adult novel, and most of the characters were in their middle to late teens (if you count a 300 year old vampire as a 'late teen'), but the story was not just a teen scream.

The plot was twisty, which I loved, but I could've done with a little bit sooner introduction to Adeline instead of almost a third of the way through. Loved the French words and phrases that zoomed me back to high school French classes, and the final confrontation was enough to keep me racing to the final page. I recommend the novel, even for those who don't like vampires. Just remember - "Never trust a Vampire!"
