Synopsis
Cal Rogan, former rising star detective, fired from the Police Department because of his heroin addiction, wakes up in a squalid alley with blood all over his jacket and no memory of how it got there. It is Saturday, the day on which he has a supervised visit with his seven-year-old daughter Ellie, whom he adores. During the visit she innocently asks him, “Being a junkie’s a good thing, right Daddy?” This shifts something deep in Cal’s psyche and he determines to face the horrors of detox and the humiliation of rehab.
Then he finds Kevin, his best friend from his old life, dead. His former colleagues tell him that it was suicide but Cal knows Kevin would never kill himself and vows to get justice for him. Cal’s mission takes the reader into the world of the streets and the quirky characters who inhabit them, the world of the drug gangs who prey on them and the multi-millionaire criminals who control them.
Praise for Junkie
Robert French has given us a real fix with his first novel Junkie - I'm worried that we could have a serious addiction problem with his writing. Ex-cop Cal Rogan is a highly sympathetic central character who tackles a murder case while trying to deal with his own heroin addiction and maintain a relationship with his young daughter, the only anchor in his chaotic life. The author introduces a wide range of colourful characters, all of whom come to life with the gritty and realistic dialogue. The book maintains a fast pace and a high thrill level. It's an elegant page turner that I highly recommend. Hurry up with Oboe, Mr. French, we can't take the withdrawal.
This is one of those 'can't put down' books and I enjoyed every bit of it. I was surprised to find myself caring so much about the characters especially the ones on the streets. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to the next Cal Rogan mystery. Highly recommend.
It is clear that Robert French has undertaken a great deal of research and has developed a keen insight into the problems of drug abuse and how it affects people caught in that trap. A great story - I can't wait for Oboe to be released. I will definitley buy.
