Walki's Review
The Hayle Coven. Powerful, but they had to move a few times and generally overnight, because of a few magical accidents. An inconvenience for sixteen-year-old Syd who has to feel the outsider in every high school, while her eight-year-old sister Meira has to make sure she keeps her human appearance at school. Their mother is the powerful and generous witch Miriam Hayle, head of the Hayle Coven; their father is the Demon Lord Haralthazar. Their uncle Frank is a vampire. Syd has trouble controlling her powers, while for Meira It is…child's play.
Patti Larsen spent 100 pages describing Syd's life and almost lost me, despite her humorous style. However she did then get around to deliver a captivating story with characters easy to warm to, and an entertaining cat.
In this book Syd turns two lives around (the bully and the football hero in her school) and, despite her strong desire to be normal, finds herself the only one 'left standing' to save her family and her coven, because she is in a rebel phase.
I would say that what ultimately saves the Hayle Coven from betrayal and destruction, is the close bond between Syd and her mother. And the mother's determination to stop burning the home-made cookies.
A sequel, with more cookies, would be definitely welcome.
